Vishnu Purana, Book OneDurvasa's Garland and Indra
From the Vishnu Purana. Once the sage Durvasa gave Indra a garland of divinely fragrant flowers. Indra, seated on his elephant Airavata and proud of his wealth, carelessly placed the garland on the elephant's head. The elephant threw it to the ground and trampled it.
Angered that a blessing had been treated with contempt, Durvasa cursed: "Your wealth will leave you, who are puffed up by wealth." At that moment Lakshmi withdrew from the three worlds, and the gods lost their strength and prosperity.
Only after the ocean of milk was churned, on Vishnu's advice, did Lakshmi appear again. Wealth leaves the one who does not respect it, and winning it back takes great labour.
