Valmiki Ramayana, Bala KandaThe Slaying of Tataka
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda. Travelling with Vishvamitra, Rama and Lakshmana came to a desolate forest. Once a prosperous land, it had been laid waste by the rakshasi Tataka, who killed all who passed.
"Kill her," said Vishvamitra. Rama hesitated at the thought of slaying a woman. The sage explained: "Protecting the people is a prince's duty. One who works cruelty must not be spared because she is a woman; the righteous have done so before."
Rama said humbly, "My father commanded me to obey your words. I will do as you say." When Tataka charged at them, Rama struck her down, and the forest found peace again. Heeding the noble was the way to Rama's first victory.
