Vaathu murkoorael

Meaning

Do not be the first to start an argument.

Word by word

வாது
argument, dispute
do not be the first to start

Explanation

Do not be the first to start an argument. Most disputes are born from the pride that says "I am the greatest."

The one who starts an argument often gives up even the truth to protect his pride. The one who stays calm rises in the end.

Shiva Purana; Linga Purana

The Search for the Top and the Base

From the Shiva Purana. Once Brahma and Vishnu began to argue, "Which of us is the greater?" The dispute grew until it was on the verge of war.

Then, between the two, appeared a vast column of light whose top and base could not be seen. They agreed, "Whoever finds its end is the greater." Vishnu took the form of a boar and dug downwards; Brahma took the form of a swan and flew upwards.

Vishnu, unable to find the base, returned and admitted the truth. Brahma, however, took as witness a ketaki flower that was drifting down, and falsely claimed, "I have seen the top." Then Lord Shiva appeared from the column, rebuked the lie and honoured Vishnu for his honesty. What began as an argument ended in the defeat of pride.
