This warning matters even more when we hold power. Protecting the dignity of the one before us is our own dignity.

Mahabharata, Adi Parva

Shakuntala in Dushyanta's Court

From the Mahabharata, Adi Parva. At the hermitage of the sage Kanva, King Dushyanta married Shakuntala by the Gandharva rite and left, promising to send for her soon. Years passed and he did not come.

Shakuntala came to the royal court with her son Bharata. But before the whole assembly, Dushyanta cut her off: "I do not know you. Who are you? Go, lying woman!"

With tears and dignity, Shakuntala answered in profound words about truth and the honour of a wife. Then a divine voice from the sky declared, "She speaks the truth; this is your son." Dushyanta bowed his head and accepted them both. He was shamed before the court for his cutting words.
