Explanation

Rise at dawn. Daybreak is a sacred hour, when the mind is clear and the world is calm.

For one who rises early and begins with worship and duty, the whole day turns out well. This is the brahma muhurta our ancestors honoured.

Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda

'Kausalya Supraja Rama'

From the Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda. Travelling with Vishvamitra, Rama and Lakshmana spent the night on a bed of grass on the bank of the Sarayu.

Before daybreak, in the hour of dawn, Vishvamitra woke them lovingly: "Kausalya supraja Rama, purva sandhya pravartate. Uttishtha narashardula, kartavyam daivam ahnikam" (Rama, noble son of Kausalya, dawn is breaking in the east; rise, tiger among men; the daily sacred duties must be done).

The two princes rose at once, bathed, performed their dawn worship and continued the journey. That very first line still opens the Venkatesha Suprabhatam, sounding at dawn in millions of homes today.

To reflect on

If you rose twenty minutes earlier tomorrow, how would you use that time?
