Sthala Purana of Thiruveezhimizhalai, Shiva PuranaVishnu Offers His Own Eye as a Lotus
A story told in the Shiva Purana and the sthala purana of Thiruveezhimizhalai. Seeking the discus to defeat the asuras, Vishnu began to worship Shiva with a thousand lotus flowers, chanting a sacred name with each.
To test His love, Shiva hid one flower. When nine hundred and ninety-nine flowers had been offered, the thousandth was missing. Vishnu did not hesitate. 'Do they not call my eyes lotus eyes?' he said, and prepared to pluck out one of his own eyes and offer it as the flower.
At once Shiva appeared, stopped him and gave him the Sudarshana discus. From that day Vishnu is called Pankajaksha, the lotus-eyed. Even Vishnu, protector of the world, stood as a humble devotee. As Bhattar says, when the gods themselves stand crying 'refuge', that is devotion at its height.
