Meaning

She budded as one, unfolded as many, and stood filling this whole world; and at the same time she stands beyond all of it. What a wonder that she stays undying within my heart and works her grace there! Those who know this truth are Vishnu, who once slept on the banyan leaf, and my Lord Shiva.

Explanation

As a bud opens into a flower, she who was One unfolded as many. The whole world is she; yet she does not end with the world, she is beyond it as well. This is the truth Vedanta teaches.

Bhattar's wonder is that one so vast stays undying 'within my heart'. He says only Vishnu and Shiva fully know this secret. It is the same truth the Mother told the child on the banyan leaf in the story of verse 29.

Devi Mahatmya (Markandeya Purana), chapter 10

'I Alone Exist Here'

From the Devi Mahatmya. After Nishumbha and his armies were destroyed, only Shumbha remained. He mocked the Mother: 'Do not boast. You fight relying on the strength of others.'

The Mother answered calmly: 'I alone exist in this world. Who else is there besides me? Look, wicked one, they are all entering into me.' At that moment Brahmi, Vaishnavi, Maheshvari, Varahi and all the other powers merged into her body and vanished. The Mother stood alone.

She who was One had unfolded as many to fight, and then drew back into One. There is no better picture of Bhattar's words, 'budding as one, unfolding as many'.
