Abirami Andhadhi 60 ·

Paalinum sol iniyaay! pani maa malarp paatham vaikka / Maalinum, thaevar vanangka ninroan konrai vaar sataiyin / Maelinum, keezhninru vaethangkal paatum meyp peetam oru / Naalinum, saala nanroa atiyaen mutai naayth thalaiyae?

Meaning

O you whose words are sweeter than milk! To set down your cool flower feet, is my foul dog's head better by far than Vishnu, than the long konrai-garlanded matted hair of Shiva whom the gods bow to, and than the true fourfold seat where the Vedas stand below and sing?

Explanation

The places where the Mother's feet rest: Vishnu, Shiva's matted hair, the seat upheld by the Vedas. These are the highest places in the world. Among them Bhattar calls his own head 'a foul dog's head', the very height of humility.

The answer is in the question: 'Is this better than those?' No; yet the Mother came and placed her feet there. She comes not because of worth but because of love. It continues the 'children she bore' of the previous verse.

Kali tradition (Dakshina Kali)

Shiva Lies Beneath Kali's Feet

From the tradition of Kali worship. Even after defeating the asuras, Mother Kali went on dancing, unrestrained, in the fury of battle. The earth shook with every step, and the frightened gods ran to Shiva.

Shiva took up no weapon. He lay down quietly in the path of her dance. In the force of the dance Kali's foot came down on His chest. Looking down, she saw her husband and stopped, biting her tongue in shame. Her fury cooled, and the world was at peace.

Tradition honours Shiva's chest and head as places where the Mother's feet have rested. Bhattar sets his own 'foul dog's head' beside those great places and marvels that the Mother accepted it as well.

Have you ever been accepted with love in a place where you felt unworthy?
