Abirami Andhadhi 59 ·

Thanjam pirithu illai eethu allathu, enru un thavanerikkae / Nenjam payila ninaikkinrilaen, otrai neelsilaiyum / Anju ampum ikku alaraaki ninraay: ariyaar eninum / Panju anju mel atiyaar, atiyaar petra paalaraiyae.

Meaning

I never even thought to train my heart in your path of penance, knowing there is no refuge but this. O you who stand holding the single long sugarcane bow and the five arrows that are flowers! Even if their children know nothing, mothers with feet so soft they shrink even from cotton will never reject the children they have borne.

Explanation

The previous verse ended 'any refuge'; this begins 'there is no other refuge'. But here Bhattar admits a fault: 'Though I knew you were my only refuge, I did not train myself properly in your path.'

Then his trust takes the form of a lovely image: mothers whose feet are so soft they shrink from walking even on cotton do not reject their children, however ignorant those children are. The idea of verse 45, 'it is good to bear with me', is affirmed again.

Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam (Paranjothi Munivar)

The Lord Who Suckled the Orphaned Piglets

From the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam. Because of a sage's curse, some men were born as pigs. In a forest, the mother and father pig were killed in the Pandya king's hunt, and twelve tiny piglets cried with hunger, with no milk to drink.

The Lord Somasundarar of Madurai heard the piglets' cries. He took the form of a mother pig, went to the forest and suckled all twelve piglets and kept them alive. Later they were given human faces and rose to become ministers of the Pandya king.

The piglets knew nothing and had no merit of any kind, yet the Lord came as their mother and fed them. This grace of Madurai bears out Bhattar's trust that a mother will not abandon 'the children she bore, even if they know nothing'.
