Explanation

The first half is a Kanchi story: with the two measures of grain Shiva measured out to her, the Mother performed all thirty-two kinds of charity. With a small measure she sustains a vast world.

Tradition reads the second half as Bhattar's own experience. Lost in the Mother's radiant face, he told the king the new moon was a full moon, and it seemed a lie. But the Mother made it true and made the moon rise. The question 'Is this your true grace?' mixes playful teasing with gratitude.

Kanchi tradition (Kamakshi's thirty-two charities)

Thirty-two Charities from Two Measures of Grain

From the Kanchi tradition. To the Mother Kamakshi, doing penance at Kanchi, Shiva measured out only two measures of grain. 'Sustain the world with this,' He said.

With that small measure of grain the Mother performed all thirty-two kinds of charity: food for the hungry, medicine for the sick, help with learning, a wedding for a poor girl, water sheds for travellers, food for animals and more. The grain in her hands never ran out.

So Kamakshi is praised as 'Aram Valartha Nayaki', the Lady who made dharma grow. The phrase 'the thirty-two charities' is still used in Tamil homes. At the start of this verse Bhattar praises the Mother who turns a small gift into great grace.
