Life of Bhaskararaya (Sri Vidya tradition)The Mother on Bhaskararaya's Shoulder
From the Sri Vidya tradition. In the 18th century, around the time of Abirami Bhattar, a great Sri Vidya worshipper named Bhaskararaya lived on the banks of the Kaveri. He wrote the famous commentary on the Lalita Sahasranama called Saubhagya Bhaskaram.
Once, in an assembly, an ascetic spoke of him with contempt. Tradition says that when the ascetic later looked closely at Bhaskararaya, he saw the Mother Lalita sitting on his shoulder as a little girl. The ascetic bowed and asked his forgiveness.
The Mother was always with the one who meditated on her form alone each day. When Bhattar says in this verse 'there is no penance like it', he means that meditation.
