The life of Ramprasad Sen, Bengal Shakta traditionThe Mother Comes as a Daughter to Mend the Fence
From the Shakta tradition of Bengal. In the eighteenth century, in Abirami Bhattar's own time, the poet Ramprasad Sen lived in Bengal. The simple songs he sang to Mother Kali are still on the lips of the people of Bengal. Wherever he looked, he saw the Mother.
One day he was mending the fence of his house. His daughter stood on the other side, helping by passing the rope back to him. He sang as he worked, and she quietly helped. When the work was done and he went inside, he found his daughter there; she said she had never gone out at all. Then Ramprasad understood: the Mother herself had come as his daughter to help, so that she could hear his songs.
For one who saw the Mother in every direction, the Mother came and stood even at his garden fence. This is the same experience Bhattar sings of when he says he sees her form 'in every direction I look'.
