Meaning

O lovely Goddess seated on the lotus thronged with bees! Whenever I think of your radiant form, in which all the universes stand as your own light, I am filled with joy; my inner faculties swell, overflow their banks and become open space. How could I ever forget your wondrous skill?

Explanation

The previous verse ended 'great grace' (aliye); this begins 'the lotus thronged with bees' (ali). There 'ali' means grace; here it means bees. This is the andhadhi's play on words.

This verse describes a spiritual experience. The four inner faculties, mind, intellect, ego and memory, swell up, lose their limits like a flood that breaks its banks, and become open space. It is the state in which the boundary of 'I' dissolves and merges into the Mother's light. How could one forget her who gave that experience?

The life of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa (as recorded by Mahendranath Gupta and Swami Saradananda)

Kali Appears as an Ocean of Light at Dakshineswar

From the life of Sri Ramakrishna. As a young man, Gadadhar, later known as Ramakrishna, served as priest at the Kali temple of Dakshineswar near Kolkata. His heart had only one longing: 'Mother, I must see you face to face.' He wept and prayed every day and passed sleepless nights in anguish.

One day, in unbearable pain, he seized the sword in the shrine, thinking, 'What use is this life if I cannot see you?' At that moment the temple, the walls and the doors all vanished. A boundless ocean of light came surging towards him wave upon wave and swallowed him completely. He fell unconscious, and within there was only the Mother's bliss.

The experience Bhattar sings of, when thinking of the form in which 'all the universes stand as your light' makes 'the inner faculties swell, overflow and become open space', is what Ramakrishna found in that ocean of light.
