Bhagavata Purana, Book 10 (Usha and Aniruddha)Chitralekha Paints the Face from a Dream
From the Bhagavata Purana. Usha, daughter of the demon king Banasura, saw a handsome young man in a dream. When she woke, only his face remained in her mind; she knew neither his name nor his home. Her friend Chitralekha was a gifted painter.
From memory alone, Chitralekha painted, one by one, the faces of many young men of the world: gods, gandharvas and kings. Usha looked at each painting. When the portrait of a young man of Dwaraka appeared, her face lit up: 'This is he!' He was Aniruddha, the grandson of Krishna. Chitralekha used her yogic power to bring him from Dwaraka.
A painting brought back to life a face that was fixed in the mind. Bhattar, too, says he has 'painted within my own two eyes' the Mother's pearl ornament, her diamond earrings and her smile. That beloved face, fixed in his mind, will never leave him.
