Explanation

The previous verse ended 'lotus'; this begins 'garland'. This verse is like a dhyana sloka, a verse for meditation. Each word is a mark of her: garland, weapon, bow, hour, refuge, hands, colour, name, eyes.

This is the form of Lalita Tripurasundari in the Sri Vidya tradition: red radiance, four hands holding the noose, the goad, the sugarcane bow and the flower arrows, and three eyes. The special phrase Bhattar adds is 'the treasure she has kept for us is her sacred feet': above all her weapons, she has saved her feet for her devotees.

Tripura Rahasya (attributed to Haritayana)

Dattatreya Reveals the Secret of Tripura to Parashurama

From the Tripura Rahasya. The great warrior Parashurama, after many battles, was restless in mind. When he met Rama one day, a question rose in his heart: 'What is this world, with all its wars and victories? What is real?'

Seeking an answer, he went to the sage Dattatreya. Dattatreya taught him the worship of Mother Tripurasundari and the truth that she is the pure consciousness underlying all awareness. Through many stories he explained that 'Tripura is she who shines beyond the three states of waking, dream and deep sleep'. With that wisdom Parashurama found peace.

Tripura is she of the three cities, the three states and the three eyes. The form Bhattar sings of, 'the Mother's name is Tripura, her eyes are one and two', is the same Mother who gave Parashurama peace.

To reflect on

Tonight before sleep, hold one form of the Mother in your mind for a few minutes in meditation.
