Explanation

The previous verse ended 'no wealth'; this begins 'gives wealth'. This is the most widely sung verse of Abirami Andhadhi, recited daily in many homes.

The word 'gives' comes seven times: wealth, learning, a tireless mind, beauty, good kin, every good thing and honour. But all of these come from the corner of the Mother's eye, and only 'to those who are called her devotees'. The inner sense is that instead of running after wealth, if we give our love to the Mother, everything comes by itself.

The life of Adi Shankara, the Kanakadhara Stotram tradition

The Glance That Rained Golden Gooseberries

From the tradition of Adi Shankara's life. As a young brahmachari going for alms, Shankara stopped at the door of a poor brahmin woman. She had nothing in the house to give. Searching in shame, she found only a single dried gooseberry, and placed it in his hand with love.

Seeing her poverty and her love, Shankara's heart melted. Standing right there, he sang twenty-one verses in praise of the sidelong glance of Mother Mahalakshmi. That is the Kanakadhara Stotram. Tradition says that when he finished, golden gooseberries rained down on the poor woman's house.

She had given only a dried gooseberry, but it held her whole love. A single sidelong glance from the Mother poured wealth upon her. This is what Bhattar means when he says the Mother's glance gives wealth 'to those who are called her devotees'.
