Bhagavata Purana, Book 6Ajamila, Saved by the Name He Called His Son
From the Bhagavata Purana. In Kanyakubja lived a brahmin named Ajamila. Good in his youth, he later went astray and spent his whole life in wrongdoing. He had many children, and he named the youngest Narayana and loved him dearly.
When Ajamila's hour of death came, the fearsome messengers of Yama came to drag him away. In terror he cried out to his beloved son, 'Narayana!' At that instant the messengers of Vishnu appeared and stopped Yama's messengers: 'He has spoken the Lord's holy name. You cannot touch him.'
Ajamila had not said the name thinking of God; he was calling his son. Yet the name saved him. Given a new life, he went to Haridwar, did penance and attained liberation. This is what Bhattar trusts when he says, 'even if my words are worthless, your holy names make them a hymn'.
