Explanation

The previous verse ended 'the corners of her eyes'; this begins 'to my eyes' delight'. Having sung of the Mother's eyes, he now sings of how his own eyes rejoiced to see her.

Here the Mother appears as Matangi, the Shyamala form born as the daughter of the sage Matanga: green in hue, veena in hand, the goddess of music. 'The Kadamba forest' recalls Kadamba Vanam, the old name of Madurai, where Meenakshi too is green and holds a parrot.

Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam (Paranjothi Munivar), the chapters on Indra's release and the founding of Madurai

The Shrine Indra Found in the Kadamba Forest

From the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam. Troubled by a sin, Indra wandered from place to place. When he entered a forest of Kadamba trees, the weight on his heart suddenly lifted. There he found a self-born lingam, worshipped it with flowers from the golden lotus tank, and built a shrine over it.

Later, a merchant named Dhananjaya spent a night in that forest and was amazed to see the gods worshipping the Lord there. He told the news to King Kulasekhara Pandya. Guided by the Lord in a dream, the king cleared the forest and built the city of Madurai around the temple.

That Kadamba forest became Madurai, where Mother Meenakshi was born and ruled. When Bhattar sings that he saw the green-hued Mother, goddess of music, 'in the Kadamba forest', the memory of that sacred forest rises.
