Abirami Andhadhi 72 ·

Engkurai theeraninru aetrukinraen, ini yaan pirakkil, / Nin kuraiyae anri yaar kurai kaan? iru neel visumpin / Min kurai kaatti melikinra naer itai melliyalaay! / Than kurai theera, emkoan satai mael vaiththa thaamaraiyae.

Meaning

I stand and praise you so that my lack may be removed. If I am ever born again, whose fault will that be but yours? O gentle one, whose slender waist is so fine it makes even the lightning of the vast sky seem less! O you whose lotus feet our Lord placed on his own matted hair to remove his own lack!

Explanation

The previous verse ended 'what lack can you have'; this begins 'my lack'. The word 'lack' plays through the whole verse: my lack, your fault, the lightning's lack, the Lord's lack.

Bhattar's argument is bold: 'If I, who stand trusting only in you, am born again, it is not my fault but yours!' This is a child's right to speak to its mother. The last line refers to the tradition that, during a lovers' quarrel, the Lord himself placed the Mother's feet upon his head to win her back. Will the feet that are a refuge even for the Lord not be a refuge for me?

The life of Jayadeva, Bhaktamal tradition; the Gita Govinda

The Line the Lord Wrote Himself

From the tradition of Jayadeva's life. The poet Jayadeva of Puri in Odisha was writing the Gita Govinda, which sings of the love between Krishna and Radha. In one song he wanted to write that, to soothe Radha in a lovers' quarrel, Krishna pleads, 'Place your tender, flower-like foot upon my head.'

But Jayadeva hesitated: 'Feet on the Lord's head? How can I write this?' He set down his pen and went to bathe. While he was away, someone in Jayadeva's form came in, took up the palm leaf, wrote something and left. When Jayadeva returned, he found the very line he had hesitated to write: 'dehi pada pallavam udaram'. Realising that Krishna himself had come and written it, he wept.

For love, the Lord willingly sets aside his own greatness. When Bhattar sings of 'the lotus feet our Lord placed on his matted hair to remove his own lack', it is the sweetness of this same love.
