Devi Mahatmya (Markandeya Purana), chapter 7Kali Slays Chanda and Munda and Becomes Chamunda
From the Devi Mahatmya. The demon king Shumbha sent two generals, Chanda and Munda, with a great army to seize the Goddess. With swords and bows they approached the Mother, who sat smiling on her lion in the Himalaya.
Seeing them, the Mother's face darkened with anger, and from her brow sprang Kali: dark-bodied, clad in a tiger skin, wearing a garland of skulls, with a sunken belly and blood-red eyes. Kali scattered the demon army, slew Chanda and Munda, and brought their heads before the Mother. Pleased, the Mother said, 'Because you have slain Chanda and Munda, you will be praised as Chamunda.'
The one Mother appears as a smile, and, when needed, as Kali and Chamunda. This is the background to the names Bhattar sings: 'the exalted Chandi who takes the lives of the wicked as offering, Kali'.
