Explanation

The previous verse ended 'those who meditate on'; this begins 'I have marked'. Having said that those who meditate on the Mother end rebirth, he now says firmly, 'I have done so.'

'I have blocked the straight road by which Death comes' is a bold line, the voice of fearlessness. Remembering that Thirukkadaiyur is where the Lord kicked Yama away to save Markandeya, the line deepens. The last line recalls the Ardhanari form, in which she seized half of Shiva's body and made her home there.

Katha Upanishad

Nachiketa Waits at the Door of Death

From the Katha Upanishad. The sage Vajashravas was performing a sacrifice and giving away old, worn-out cows as gifts. His young son Nachiketa asked again and again, 'Father, to whom will you give me?' In anger his father said, 'I give you to Death!'

To honour his father's word, Nachiketa went to the world of Yama. Yama was not at home, and the boy waited at the door for three days without food or water. When Yama returned, he offered three boons to make up for keeping a guest waiting. For the third, Nachiketa asked, 'What happens after death? Tell me that truth.' Yama tempted him with wealth and kingdoms instead, but Nachiketa would not be moved. At last Yama taught him the knowledge of the undying Self.

Nachiketa did not fear Death; he stood at its very door and learned the truth. With the same fearlessness, Bhattar, who has fixed the Mother's form in his mind, sings, 'I have blocked the road by which Death comes.'
