Kotukkum porulillaan vallanmai yinnaa / Katiththamaintha paakkinut karpatutha linnaa / Kotuththa vitaamai kavikkinnaa vinnaa / Matuththuzhip paataa vital

Meaning

A show of generosity by one with nothing to give is painful; a stone in the areca nut you bite into is painful; for a poet, a gift promised but never handed over is painful; and failing to sing when the moment calls for song is painful too.

Explanation

A man with nothing to give who plays the generous patron disappoints both himself and those who trusted him. Biting on a stone in the areca nut you are chewing with betel turns a moment of pleasure into pain. Both are the hurt of an expectation broken.

The third and fourth lines belong to the world of poets: for a poet, a promised gift that is never handed over is a sorrow, and failing to sing when the moment calls for song is a stain on the poet's own duty. The pain here lies in the gap between word and deed, between the moment and the response.

The Periya Puranam tells how, when the hymn-singing saints sang at the right moment, temple doors themselves opened and closed. If we make a promise today, we must keep it in time; and when our talent is needed, we must step forward without hesitation.

From the Periya Puranam

The Temple Door at Thirumaraikkadu

From the Periya Puranam. Tradition holds that at the temple of Thirumaraikkadu (Vedaranyam) the Vedas themselves once worshipped the Lord and then shut the great door behind them as they left. For a long time after, that door stayed closed, and people entered by a side gate to worship.

Once Thirunavukkarasar and Thirugnanasambandar came to the town together. Seeing the closed door, Sambandar said, "Appar, please sing so that this door may open." Sensing what the moment required, Thirunavukkarasar sang without hesitation a hymn beginning 'Pannin ner mozhiyaal'. As the hymn ended, the great door slowly swung open, and the people worshipped the Lord with tears of joy.

When they came out after worship, Thirunavukkarasar said to Sambandar, "Now the door must open and close again. You sing." Sambandar sang a verse, and the door closed. Sekkizhar sings that from that day the door opened and closed as it should.

Both saints sang at the moment it was needed, without hesitation. Failing to sing when the moment calls is a sorrow; a song sung in its time can open even a temple door.

To reflect on

Is there a promise you made that you have not yet kept, and when will you keep it?
