From the Valmiki Ramayana (Yuddha Kanda)The Aditya Hridayam
From the Valmiki Ramayana. The final battle between Rama and Ravana went on and on. However many times Rama cut off Ravana's heads, they grew back. Weary from battle, Rama stood lost in thought.
Then the sage Agastya, who had come with the gods to watch the battle, came down and approached Rama. "Rama, I will tell you a sacred hymn that conquers every enemy, dispels anxiety and lengthens life. Listen," he said. In the middle of the battlefield he taught him the Aditya Hridayam, the hymn in praise of the Sun.
Rama listened in stillness. Sipping water three times in purification, he faced the sun and recited the hymn. His mind grew clear and new strength was born in him. Valmiki says the Sun in the sky rejoiced and blessed him: "You will soon win."
Then Rama loosed the Brahmastra Agastya had given him and brought Ravana down. Even today many Hindus recite the Aditya Hridayam every morning.
This book's final image, of creatures standing amid the battlefield listening to the sacred Veda, finds its fulfilment in Rama standing in the midst of battle to hear Agastya's hymn: even in the greatest war, what finally brings victory is a mind at peace.
