From the Mahabharata (Stri Parva and Shanti Parva)Karna Was My Brother
From the Mahabharata. After the war, the Pandavas went to the banks of the Ganga to offer water to the fallen. Each poured water calling out the names of his kin. Then Kunti came forward in tears.
"My sons, offer water to Karna too. He was my first son, born to me by the grace of the Sun before I was married. He was your elder brother." The Pandavas were stunned.
Yudhishthira was heartbroken: "Mother, why did you not tell us before? Had we known he was our brother, this war would never have happened. I have conquered the whole earth and become the slayer of my own brother. Now I understand why, when he spoke harshly in the assembly, my anger melted at the sight of his feet, which were so like yours." Then he himself offered water for Karna.
Yudhishthira, standing at the peak of victory, later heard the story of Karna's life from Narada and sank into deep grief.
This verse's image of boats drifting without direction on a flood of blood recalls how, after war, even the hearts of the victors are left adrift.
