From the Mahabharata (Shalya Parva)The Fall of Duryodhana
From the Mahabharata. On the eighteenth day the whole Kaurava army was destroyed. Left alone, Duryodhana hid beneath the waters of a lake. The Pandavas found him and challenged him. Yudhishthira said, "Fight any one of us and win, and the kingdom is yours."
Duryodhana rose with his mace and chose to fight Bhima. Balarama, returning from his pilgrimage, arrived just then; both had learned mace-fighting from him. The duel was like two mountains clashing, and Duryodhana's skill was the greater.
Then Krishna signalled to Arjuna, who struck his own thigh to remind Bhima: in the dice hall, when Duryodhana had told Draupadi to sit on his thigh, Bhima had sworn to break that thigh. Bhima's mace shattered Duryodhana's thigh, and the king fell.
Seeing the rule broken, Balarama grew angry, and Krishna calmed him. The epic also says that the gods showered flowers on the fallen Duryodhana, honouring the valour of one who never wavered from his stand.
The climactic scene of this book, the field where a king fell, became real at the end of Kurukshetra: the mountain of pride collapsed, yet even a fallen warrior is owed respect.
