Explanation

On the split foreheads of tusked killer elephants, struck by unyielding warriors, the golden forehead plates (odai) flash like streaks of lightning. The elephants seem dark clouds and the gold plates lightning, like a stormy sky.

An ornament put on for beauty still gleams amid destruction. In war even the emblems of glory end up as memorials to the fallen.

From the Mahabharata (Vana Parva)

Arjuna and the Nivatakavachas

From the Mahabharata. After receiving the Pashupata from Shiva, Arjuna went to heaven at Indra's invitation and learned the divine weapons. When his training was done, Indra asked one thing as his teacher's fee: "Thirty million demons called the Nivatakavachas, who live in the midst of the ocean, torment the gods. Defeat them."

Arjuna set out in the divine chariot driven by Indra's charioteer Matali, wearing a golden crown Indra had given him. When he reached their city in the midst of the sea, the demons conjured darkness, storms and showers of stones by their magic, and the sky filled with thunder and lightning.

Arjuna loosed divine weapons and dispelled those illusions one by one. At last he loosed Indra's own thunderbolt weapon, which struck like lightning and destroyed the demon army. Their elephants and chariots fell, and their golden ornaments flashed upon the sea.

When Arjuna returned, Indra embraced him. Many of the weapons Arjuna later used at Kurukshetra were first tested in this battle.

This battle in the midst of the sea, full of lightning and thunder, is a fitting background to this verse's golden plates flashing like lightning.
