Explanation

The Earth, a fair lady with a spotless dark body, turns red as if wrapped in a crimson garment. Seeing the land as a woman, Nilamagal, is an ancient tradition in both Tamil and Sanskrit; she is Bhudevi, consort of Vishnu.

Rather than naming the blood of the battlefield directly, the poet says that Mother Earth herself has put on a red garment. Behind that gentle phrase lies the sorrow of blood spilled upon the Earth who is our mother.

From the Srimad Bhagavatam (Third Canto)

Varaha Rescues the Earth

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. The demon Hiranyaksha grew mighty and hid the Earth goddess at the bottom of the cosmic ocean. Without land, living beings had nowhere to live, and Brahma was at a loss, unable to go on with creation.

Then from Brahma's nostril came a tiny boar, which in a moment grew as large as a mountain. It was Varaha, the boar incarnation of Vishnu. With a mighty roar Varaha plunged into the ocean, lifted the Earth from the depths on his tusks, and rose up.

On the way Hiranyaksha blocked him with his mace. A fierce battle raged in the midst of the ocean, and at last Varaha slew the demon. Then he set the Earth firmly upon the waters. Gods and sages praised him, and the Earth goddess sat on his tusks like a lotus.

In Hindu tradition the Earth is a mother. That is why there is a custom, on rising in the morning, of saluting the Earth with the verse 'samudra vasane devi' and asking her pardon for setting foot upon her.

This verse's image of the Earth wrapped in a red garment recalls Mother Earth suffering in war; the story of Varaha says that protecting that mother is the Lord's own work.
