From the Srimad Bhagavatam (Tenth Canto)Balarama Drags Hastinapura
From the Srimad Bhagavatam. Samba, Krishna's son, carried off Duryodhana's daughter Lakshmana from her svayamvara. Many Kauravas together surrounded him, captured him in battle and imprisoned him.
Hearing the news, the Yadavas prepared for war. But Balarama said, "Let there be no war with the Kurus; I will go myself and speak for peace," and went to Hastinapura. Humbly he asked the Kauravas, "Release Samba."
The Kauravas laughed in their arrogance: "Do the Yadavas give us orders? The kingdom you hold was given by us; do you speak to us as equals?" they mocked.
Balarama's anger rose. "I will drag this city into the Ganga," he said, and hooking the tip of his plough into the walls of Hastinapura, he pulled. The whole city shook and tilted toward the Ganga. Terrified, the Kauravas brought Samba and Lakshmana with gifts, fell at Balarama's feet and begged forgiveness. His anger cooled, and he forgave them.
This verse's image of Balarama ploughing the very earth comes alive in this story; but what he first sought was peace, and he showed his strength only when arrogance refused it.
