Meaning

Though I know the ways by which harm comes to the soul, I never once think to serve your gracious feet; remove my karma! O Lord of the rooster banner, who lives on the great hill of Thiruthani ringed by pools and broad fields! O crest jewel of the gods!

Explanation

Failing in ignorance is one thing; knowing and still not acting is another. Admitting the second, the poet asks the Lord to remove even that.

From the life of Muthuswami Dikshitar

Sugar candy at Thiruthani

Muthuswami Dikshitar, one of the trinity of Carnatic music, went as a young man to Thiruthani hill and meditated for forty days. One day an old man met him on the steps, said, 'Muthuswami, open your mouth,' placed sugar candy on his tongue and vanished. Realising it was Murugan, Dikshitar sang his first kriti, 'Sri Nathadi Guruguho', that very moment. He set the signature 'Guruguha' in all his compositions.
