Explanation

Taking Valli 'in secret' is the kalavu marriage of the Tamil akam tradition: love unknown to the parents. The beauty here is that Murugan embraces even the love traditions of Tamil life.

From the Kanda Puranam, Valli's birth

The deer's daughter

Vishnu's two daughters, Amritavalli and Sundaravalli, did penance to marry Murugan. Amritavalli grew up with Indra as Deivanai. Sundaravalli was to be born on earth: on Vallimalai a doe conceived her through the gaze of the sage Shivamuni. Nambiraja, chief of the hunters, found the baby lying in a pit dug for valli roots, named her Valli and raised her. Both wives are Vishnu's daughters, so Murugan is Vishnu's son-in-law as well.
