Meaning

You did not long for the feet of him who married Valli, the artful young girl who scares the parrots from the clear millet field. O heart, you longed instead for leaping carp-like eyes that push against vine-like ears, for red lips, for deceitful words, for the smile spread with white pearls of teeth!

Explanation

Two loves are compared: the pure love of Murugan and Valli, and the illusory beauty the heart chases. The same similes, fish-like eyes and pearly teeth, fit both; the difference lies in the intent.

From the life of Tulsidas

Ratnavali's words

The young Tulsidas was boundlessly attached to his wife Ratnavali. When she went to her parents' home, he crossed the river on a stormy night and ran to see her. Shaken, she said, 'If you gave Rama half the love you give this body of bone and skin, you would be free of rebirth.' Those words transformed him. He left home, sang of Rama and composed the Ramcharitmanas.
