Meaning

Grant me your cool lotus feet, the pure wisdom that devotees see, approach, drink deep of and melt in! O guardian who hurled the spear so that the gods did not tumble and flee in terror, seeing fierce, punishing Sura seize their realms and, long ago, take all the worlds and press in upon them!

Explanation

This verse repeats the sound 'nda' again and again, raising the beat of war drums in the words themselves. It is a fine example of Arunagirinathar's mastery of rhythm. The content is simple: grant me the feet that give wisdom.

From the life of Arunagirinathar

The contest with Villiputhurar

Tradition says Villiputhurar, who sang the Mahabharata in Tamil, used to debate scholars and cut off the ear of whoever lost. Arunagirinathar debated him; Villi could not explain a verse of the Kandar Andhadhi made only of 'ta' sounds, beginning 'Thithatha thaththitha'. When the defeated Villi offered his ear, Arunagiri forgave him: 'Just give up the custom of cutting ears.' He won in rhythm, and he won in mercy.
