Valmiki Ramayana, Kishkindha KandaJambavan Awakens Hanuman's Strength
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Kishkindha Kanda. Searching for Sita, the vanaras reached the southern shore and were dismayed by the ocean, a hundred yojanas wide. 'Who can cross this?' Each spoke of how far he could leap, but none could make it.
Only Hanuman sat silent. Then the aged Jambavan came to him and said: 'You are the son of the Wind. As a child you leapt at the sun thinking it was a fruit. You have forgotten your own strength. Rise! This ocean is a single leap for you.'
Hearing those words, Hanuman grew in body and his heart grew firm. He climbed the Mahendra mountain and leapt across the sea. An elder's words became nectar and woke a hero.
