Explanation

This verse gives asking a very high worth: in some situations asking equals giving. When? When one asks of a person who does not say 'no' even in a dream. When such a person gives, the seeker does not merely receive; he also gives that person the opportunity to carry out his charity. So in a way he too becomes a giver. This subtlety is very deep. For a donor to give he needs someone, and that someone is the seeker. Without the seeker his dharma cannot even act. So the seeker becomes an instrument of his dharma. By becoming the reason for the giver's fame the seeker too is a partner in giving.

Commentators explain 'karathal kanavilum thetraadhaar' well: giving has become so natural to these people that they say 'no' not only awake but even in dreams. It is not a habit but an innate nature. Such a heart is rare among the rare. We learn from this that to honour such donors and to feel no embarrassment in asking them are both dharma. At the same time we must not misuse the good heart of such donors but ask only out of true need.

The balance Valluvar shows here is striking. We usually think the giver is high and the receiver low. This verse sets that thinking upright. The greatness of charity lies not only in the giver's mind but in the trust the asker shows. So the two are the two hands of one dharma.

A story

Karna and Indra

This is Karna's gift of his armour and earrings in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. Karna was the son of the Sun; he was born with armour and earrings, and as long as he wore them no one could kill him. It was Karna's custom, when he worshipped the Sun at midday, to give whatever anyone asked.

Indra, father of Arjuna, wished to protect his son and came to Karna in the form of a brahmin. The Sun god appeared to Karna in a dream and warned, 'Tomorrow Indra will come and ask for your armour; do not give it.' Karna calmly refused: 'I live with the fame of a donor. I do not say no to a seeker.'

The next day the brahmin stretched out his hand and said, 'I want your armour and earrings.' Karna, smiling, cut the armour from his body with his sword and placed it with the earrings in the brahmin's hand. Pain showed on his face, yet there was no hesitation in giving.

Ashamed and amazed, Indra revealed his true form and said, 'Ask something in return for your gift.' Karna tried to decline: 'To ask after giving spoils the gift.' In the end Indra gave him a divine weapon that could be used only once.

The grace of the verse is just this: Indra stood before Karna, who never said no even in dreams, as a seeker. When the king of the gods himself is in the position of one asking, asking equals giving. Karna's fame spread across the world.

The story shows not only the depth of charity but that a true donor gives gladly without thinking of the consequences.
