Explanation

This verse links the mind of the seeker with the existence of givers. 'Karappilaar vaiyagathu unmaiyaal', because there are in the world those who give without concealing, points to that belief. It is this belief that lets the poor stand boldly before them and ask. It is a chain of trust in a society.

From this it appears that the basis of asking is the good name of givers. Once it spreads about a person that 'this one gives without concealing', the poor will seek out that door. So the conduct of donors determines the respect of asking in society. Another view of the verse carries a caution that 'what the seekers take up' could become a trade. That is, some commentators voice the concern that because givers exist, some may begin to live by asking without working. Both readings show Valluvar's deep social vision.

So if we are givers we should give properly and to those in need; if we are ourselves seekers we should act without wasting the trust of the donor. Honesty on both sides is dharma. We can use this verse as a social test: how many in our town give without concealing? If they are there, the poor walk without breaking at heart. If they dwindle, the world grows dark. So each of us should try, at our own level, to be such a one.

A story

The Annadhanam Givers

Every year, at the foot of the Palani hills, thousands of devotees walk with kavadi for the Thaipusam festival. Along their path volunteers have long followed the tradition of giving free meals. Even devotees who ask nothing from anyone set out in the faith that food will be found on the way.

An old kavadi bearer named Murugesan came in this way. He had no money, only the hope that food would be found somewhere along the road. At the door of one house a family laid out rice and sambar on banana leaves and called all who passed. 'Come, father, it is Murugan's prasadam,' they said lovingly.

Murugesan ate the food that came without his stretching out a hand. A thought rose in his mind: 'It is because such people are in this world that we dare to undertake this journey.' It is they who give the courage to continue the pilgrimage each year.

The elder of the house told Murugesan, 'This custom was begun by our grandfather. If we do not give annadhanam today, the lack is ours.' For the giving family it was not a pride but a family duty.

The next year, when Murugesan began to receive a pension, he too gave annadhanam for one day along that path. The receiver became a giver. This is the chain of trust Valluvar speaks of.

The event tells us that the unconcealing heart of donors is society's trust, and to protect that trust is a duty on both sides.

To reflect on

Has anyone ever come to you for help trusting in you? How did you honour that trust?
