Explanation

The comparison in this verse is harsh but exact. The men who come to the place of execution to a person condemned are not kinsmen; they are strangers, who show no mercy. They come only to carry out an end. The heroine says her evening arrives in just that manner. The word 'edhilar' carries the sense of both stranger and enemy. When her beloved was here, evening was like a relative and a friend; now the same evening seems a stranger without pity.

The word 'kolaikkalam', place of execution, shows the loneliness and dread of the place. A condemned man has no one to support him, and the heroine, being without her partner, feels the same lack of support. The key to the verse is the phrase 'kaadhalar ilvazhi', when the beloved is not there. The evening has not changed; it is the absence of the beloved that has changed it. In this single phrase Valluvar subtly says that the cause of sorrow lies not outside but within.

When we face bereavement or a long separation today, certain hours can feel threatening in the same way. Rather than hating such an hour, it helps to bring small daily rituals into it. Lighting a lamp, offering prayer, writing out what is in the heart: these have the strength to turn that place of execution into a home again.

A story

Savitri's Fated Day

This is the story of Savitri and Satyavan from the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata.

Savitri, a princess of the Madra country, chose and married Satyavan, the son of the blind Dyumatsena, who lived in the forest. Before the wedding the sage Narada had said that Satyavan would die within a year. Savitri still did not change her decision. In a forest hut she lived a simple life with her husband and his parents. She alone knew on which day his life would end.

In every evening in the forest hut a kind of trembling lay within her, but she did not show it, and she cared for her husband's parents.

As that day approached she kept a fast of three days without eating. On the appointed day, when Satyavan went into the forest to cut firewood, she went with him. As the sun sank and the evening drew near, her heart grew tight. She knew what was to come. The evening breeze and the birdsong that were usually sweet sounded to her like the footsteps of strangers coming to pronounce a judgement.

Satyavan cried out with a headache and lay in her lap. Yama came and took his life away. Savitri followed Yama without turning back. Her love, her wisdom and her firmness softened Yama himself. He gave her several boons, and at last returned Satyavan's life to her.

Through that whole night Savitri followed Yama. He told her many times to turn back. Each time she spoke gently of the ways of dharma, and tradition says her words softened even Yama. So the forest that had looked like an execution ground became, in the end, the place where a life was restored.

It is true that the evening which draws near to a loss can frighten like an execution ground. But this story shows that love and firm resolve can overcome even that.
