Explanation

The very opening of this verse carries a gentle complaint: he has gone in search of strength. 'Uran' is a word with several senses: power, wisdom, success. Parimelazhagar takes it as the strength of action, that is, the power to carry out one's duty; others take it as victory in war. Either way, he went alone, with his own heart as his companion. There are two subtleties in the phrase 'ullam thunaiyaga'. One is that he needed no other companion, and his own resolve was enough. The other is a hint that he did not take with him the heroine who should have gone along.

Thinking of him who went alone, the heroine is in sorrow. Yet she has not given up her life; the desire that he will come back is what keeps her alive. In the words 'innum ulen', 'I am still alive', her weariness and her hope appear together. 'Innum', 'still', shows the length of time that has passed.

Many people set out for their goals in life, and the sacrifice of those who wait for them is seldom spoken of. This verse gives us the eyes to respect that waiting. If the one who goes in search of victory is a hero, the one who waits and sustains life is a hero too. Valluvar honours both kinds of strength together. The heroine's quiet endurance is her own form of valour, and her hope is her weapon in a campaign that no one sees.

A story

Arjuna on the Indrakila Hill and Draupadi in Kamyaka

This is a part of the story of Arjuna's journey of penance in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata.

The Pandavas, living in exile in the Kamyaka forest, realised that to defeat their enemies they would need divine weapons. On the advice of the sage Vyasa, Arjuna set out alone toward the Himalayas. He took with him his strength, his wisdom, his bow and his resolve for penance. As he went, his brothers and Draupadi bade him farewell with heavy hearts.

On the Indrakila hill Arjuna performed severe penance. Tradition praises his penance directed to Lord Shiva as rare. The Mahabharata tells that Shiva came as a hunter, a Kirata, fought with him and then revealed his true form, and being pleased gave him the Pashupata weapon. The epic goes on to say that he then went to the world of Indra and studied there for several years.

Meanwhile, in the Kamyaka forest the Pandavas and Draupadi longed for his return. The epic notes that the forest seemed to have lost its beauty without Arjuna. Draupadi looked each day toward the north, the way by which he would come. The days grew long, but her hope did not break. 'He will come with victory,' she consoled Yudhishthira.

At last Arjuna returned with divine weapons and immense power and met his brothers. Draupadi's heart was filled on seeing him.

Like Valluvar's heroine, Draupadi waited with the conviction that the hope of his coming was what kept her alive. The Mahabharata honours the inner strength of the one who waits as much as the strength of the one who goes.
