Explanation

In this verse the heroine presents her own bangle as a subtle knower. 'Thannan thuraivan' is the lord of the cool seashore. Before she knew of his parting in her heart, her bangles had begun to slacken and slip. The body told the news ahead of the mind. Humour and grief are mingled here: in her saying 'my bangle is wiser than I' there is a small joke.

The underlying truth is that the body senses ahead of the heart the news the heart does not yet know. Before she realised with fear that he was about to leave, her body had grown thin and the bangle loosened. This looseness is not mere bodily change but the outward form of a fear felt in the depths of the heart.

In the akam tradition the bangle is the measure of the heroine's sorrow. The bangle slipping and falling is the sign of parting. The fancy that it understood before us makes her sorrow more alive.

In our own lives, too, the body sometimes announces beforehand a sorrow that the mind has not yet accepted. Sleeplessness, loss of appetite and tiredness tell of the heart's news in advance. Valluvar gently urges us to notice them and to accept and ease the grief of the heart. The verse also teaches us to be tender with those whose bodies change before they can speak: a loosened ring may be the first honest word they say.

A story

Akrura's Chariot and the Bangles of the Gopis

This is part of the story of Akrura's coming in the tenth canto of the Bhagavata Purana.

Kamsa, king of Mathura, sent Akrura to Vrindavan to invite Krishna and Balarama to Mathura. Akrura came to Vrindavan with his chariot. A devotee of Krishna, he met him in joy. The gopis guessed the news of his arrival that night; many, hearing it, were troubled.

The next morning, when Krishna and Balarama climbed into the chariot, the gopis left their homes and surrounded it. Tears welled in their eyes. The Bhagavata describes their state with tenderness: their bangles slackened and slipped, their ornaments scattered, their hair came loose. They stood as still as paintings.

The story goes on that Krishna sent a message to them, replying that he would soon return. When the chariot departed, they stood looking at the dusty road. Before their hearts knew it, their bodies had felt this parting and slackened.

As Valluvar's heroine says, 'the bangle understood before us', the gopis' bangles too sensed the parting beforehand. Here the gopis' love is also honoured as selfless devotion.

Vaishnava devotees melt in feeling this scene as the sorrow of the soul longing for the Lord. This part of the Bhagavata is still read with deep feeling by devotees.

Vaishnava teachers, in explaining the scene, say that the yearning of the devotee parted from the Lord shows in the body as well. For this reason it echoes at once in devotional literature and in akam poetry.

To reflect on

Has your body ever told you about a sorrow before your mind was ready to accept it?
