Explanation

In this verse the speaker is the friend, telling the hero the heroine's sign. She describes what the heroine did when she learned that he was about to travel. The heroine said nothing in words. First she looked at her bangle; then she looked at her tender shoulder; then she looked at your feet. These three looks tell a complete message.

The commentators explain the message thus: 'If you go, my bangles will slacken and slip; my shoulders will grow thin; so do not go; or if you go, I shall follow your feet.' The sequence of looks, bangle, shoulder, feet, shows in one moment both the consequence of sorrow and the remedy for it.

The friend's subtlety deserves praise. She noticed the order of the heroine's looks, understood their meaning, and conveys it to the hero. Without shattering the heroine's modesty, she brings her heart's request to him. This is a fine example of 'kurippu arivuruthal'.

In our own lives too, the order of a look may say more than words. What a person looks at and what they turn their gaze away from shows the arrangement of their mind. Those who understand this and build a loving bridge for others know the true meaning of friendship. The verse also hints at the friend's responsibility: to speak for the silent without speaking over them.

A story

Sita's Resolve and Rama's Consent

This follows the scene found in the Ayodhya Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana and in Kamban's Ramavataram.

Rama decided to go to the forest for fourteen years to keep his father's word. He came to take leave of Sita, described the hardships and dangers of the forest, and asked her to stay in the palace. Sita listened quietly.

Sita did not oppose him in words. For a moment she looked at the ornaments on her arms. She knew that if she stayed alone in the palace her body would waste so much that she could not bear them. Then she looked at Rama's feet. In that look was the resolve 'I shall follow your feet and come too.'

Afterward she told her mind in words. Valmiki puts into her mouth words to the effect that wherever Rama is, that is Ayodhya for her. First came the sign of the look; then came the word.

Rama understood her resolve and love and agreed. With Lakshmana also coming, the three set out for the forest. Mother Kausalya and others saw them off.

As Valluvar's friend tells the order of the heroine's looks, so in the Ramayana Sita's look proclaimed her decision before words.

The scene shows beautifully that love first tells its message with the eye, and the quality of Rama in understanding it.
