Explanation

In the last verse of the chapter the hero marvels at the heroine's sign. After hearing from the friend the order of her looks, he speaks to the friend. She did not tell her sickness of desire with her mouth; she told it with her eyes alone, 'iravu' meaning pleading. That is, she begged with her eyes that he take her along. That blend of modesty and daring is the subtle fullness of womanhood described as 'pennaal penmai'.

The first line of this verse is explained somewhat differently by the commentators. For 'pennaal penmai udaiththenpa' there are two readings: 'the quality called womanliness is full within woman through womanliness' and 'for women the excellence of womanliness is raised still further by her'. Both wonder at her reserved boldness.

She did not abandon her reserve; she did not open her mouth to plead. Yet through the eye she told her desire completely. This state, where reserve and expression join without clashing, is the grace that Valluvar praises.

The chapter also reaches a completion: the one who gave the sign, the one who carried it, and the one who understood it are joined in one gentle language.

The final lesson of the verse is that if we grow in the strength of saying without saying and the subtlety of hearing without being told, our relationships will be quiet and deep.

A story

Savitri's Plea and Satyavan's Consent

This is a part of the Savitri Upakhyana in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata.

Savitri married Satyavan and lived in the forest with his parents. The day on which the year foretold by Narada would end drew near; she alone knew that day. Though her heart was full of sorrow she showed it to no one. She kept a fast and performed penance. On that morning Satyavan set out for the forest to cut wood.

Savitri looked at him. She said more by her look than by her words. She glanced alternately at the ornaments on her arm and at his face. Satyavan sensed her sign. 'Do you wish to come too? But you are weary from fasting; the forest path is hard,' he asked lovingly.

Savitri said softly, 'My heart does not wish to be parted from you today.' She did not tell the true reason in her heart; but her eyes plainly told her plea. Satyavan relented and said that, after obtaining his parents' consent, he would take her.

Savitri's parents-in-law at first hesitated, because she had never asked for anything till then. But since it was her first request, they agreed. The Mahabharata goes on that this consent gave her the chance to meet Yama and win back her husband's life.

The sign by which she stood pleading with her eyes changed the fate of a family. The quality Valluvar speaks of, 'telling the sickness of desire by the eyes and pleading', shines here as the great light of love.

The story of Savitri reminds us of this love in which reserve and courage join.
