Explanation

The first verse of the chapter begins with a comparison: desire and toddy. Both are thought by the world to give joy. But the heroine states a subtle difference. Toddy brings elation only after one drinks it; it gives pleasure only after it is brought near and drunk. Love is not so. At the mere thought of the beloved the heart is glad; on seeing him joy overflows. Two states are indicated: the gladness that comes in memory and the joy that comes in sight.

The phrase 'kallukku il' sets a clear difference. Worldly wisdom says that toddy gives intoxication and later, when it clears, brings pain. The heroine's belief is that the joy of love persists even in memory, and arises not from delusion but from affection. Commentators take the comparison as saying that the pleasure of love exceeds that of toddy.

In this verse the end of longing blossoms into joy. The heroine who waited in the earlier chapter now stands at the door of the meeting. She has begun to rejoice on seeing, and to be glad at mere thought. Valluvar conveys the immediacy of this state by a simple comparison.

In our own lives we have felt the memory of a loved one keep us in gladness all day. The moment of seeing them raises that gladness still more.

Valluvar here sets the joy of love above the pleasures of the world. The message of the verse is that clear joy without delusion, joy that remains even in memory, is the special mark of love.

A story

Pururavas and Urvashi

This story follows Kalidasa's play Vikramorvasiyam.

King Pururavas rescued Urvashi, an apsaras of the world of the devas, from the asuras. Seeing her beauty and character, his heart was drawn to her. Urvashi too was troubled thinking of him. The play beautifully describes the joy each took on seeing the other. The mere thought of her made his heart glad; every moment of seeing him gave her joy beyond words.

But because of a curse, the play continues, Urvashi was turned into a creeper in the sacred grove of Karttikeya. Not seeing her, Pururavas was troubled in heart and wandered in the forest like a madman. He asked the peacock, the elephant, the bee and the swan, 'Have you seen my beloved?' This scene is among the most celebrated in the world of Sanskrit drama.

He came upon a jewel, called the 'sangamaniya', the jewel that brings union, the play says. Holding the jewel in his hand he embraced a creeper. In that embrace the creeper became Urvashi again. She who had been only in memory stood before his eyes.

Seeing her, Pururavas lost speech with joy. The pain of the days he had wandered in longing melted in that moment. Urvashi too looked at him lovingly; the two were united again.

Both states that Valluvar speaks of, 'gladness at thought and joy at sight', appear in this tale. When he thought of her his heart rejoiced; at the moment of seeing, he was glad.

Because Kalidasa joined this love with the beauty of nature in his song, it is still honoured with literary pride.

Kalidasa has composed with great charm the songs in which Pururavas speaks to each creature of nature. In them his sorrow of separation and his eagerness for union ring out mingled with the beauty of nature.
