Explanation

In this verse the heroine happily admits her defeat to her friend. In 'oodarkan sendren man' the particle 'man' stresses that she did indeed go to sulk; that is, she went having decided. But 'adhu maranthu', forgetting it, her heart went to union. 'Adhu' is the intention to sulk; 'maranthu' is having slipped out of memory. She did not deliberately drop the sulk; her heart forgot it of its own accord.

This is akin to the verse 'pulappal enachchendren pullinen' in the earlier chapter, Niraiyazhidhal. There she spoke of the embrace; here she speaks of the action of the heart. Both show the same truth from a different angle. Here the centre is that the heart went ahead without heeding her word.

Commentators also take 'man' in the sense of something that happened in the past; seen so, this is a speech recalling a past event. In the presence of her friend she shows her shyness and her joy together.

Valluvar here makes the heart a separate person and shows with humour that it ignores our plans and goes its own way. This humour does not lower the heroine; it shows her humanity.

We too often set out holding a grievance, and at the sight of a loving face it melts. Rather than being ashamed of that melting, it is better to accept with joy the truth of love in it. The verse teaches that self-knowledge may come with a smile, and that the friend who listens without teasing too harshly is a gift.

A story

Ardhanarishvara at Tiruchengode

This follows the story of Ardhanarishvara told in the Tiruchengode sthala purana and in the Shaiva Puranic tradition.

On Kailasa, Lord Shiva and Parvati were seated. The sage Bhringi, who came there, circumambulated and worshipped only Shiva, ignoring Parvati. Tradition says that Parvati was hurt by this. She thought of going apart for a while from the Lord to perform penance.

Devotees say, with charm, that Parvati set out in a mood akin to sulking. But how long could her heart stay away from the Lord? She observed the Kedara Gauri vow and performed penance to be joined with the Lord as one. Praising her penance, Lord Shiva gave her the left half of his own body and appeared as Ardhanarishvara, the sthala purana says.

The hill temple of Tiruchengode is honoured as the place where this happened. There Shiva and Shakti appear in a single form. Devotees climb thousands of steps to worship him.

Just as the heart of Valluvar's heroine went to sulking and ended in union, Parvati's heart too, though she began to leave, sought in the end the joining. But here the union is honoured not only in the body but as the oneness of two principles.

The Shaiva tradition takes this tale as a sign of the truth that Shiva and Shakti are inseparable; the sulking and uniting of love make that bond more beautiful.
