Explanation

In this verse the heroine fondly calls the hero 'kalva', thief. He is one who has stolen her heart. She tells by a comparison what his chest is to her: as toddy, though it brings the drunkard shame and pain, is still desired by him, so is his chest to her. 'Ilithakka' means worthy of contempt. 'Innaa' is pain. Even if his deeds bring her contempt and pain, his chest remains sweet to her, she says.

Here the toddy comparison of the first verse returns. There she said that the pleasure of desire exceeds toddy; here she compares herself to the state of the toddy-drinker. The two have different aims: the first the excess of pleasure, the second an unavoidable attraction.

Commentators take this verse as saying that even after the hero has committed the fault of seeking other women, the heroine is in a state of forgiving him. Others explain more gently that he caused her pain by word or deed. In either case, the core of the verse is the pull of her love.

What this verse tells us is the truth that in some loves the pull is stronger than reasons. But rather than take it here as a lesson, it is fitting to take it as an honest record of a feeling. Other chapters also counsel how to protect oneself from a harmful attraction.

Valluvar shows the heroine's weakness not as a crime but as human nature.

A story

Radha's Displeasure at Dawn

This follows a scene in Jayadeva's poem Gita Govinda.

In the Gita Govinda, Radha waits the whole night in a bower for Krishna to come. He does not come and the night passes; at dawn he arrives. His appearance shows that he has spent the night with another woman, the poem says. Radha, deeply hurt, speaks to him in anger. Tradition says this passage is famous in the Ashtapadi as the song 'Yahi Madhava'.

Radha spoke sharply: 'Go, Madhava, go to her with whom you spent the night. Why have you come to me?' But in the midst of those angry words her longing showed. His chest, his face, his voice were all things she could not forget.

Humbly, Krishna admitted his fault and, bowing before Radha, pleaded. Jayadeva puts into his mouth beautiful lines to the effect, 'Place your tender foot upon my head.' Radha's anger softened slowly and she began to accept him.

Vaishnava teachers explain this episode not as worldly love but as the feeling of the soul yearning to receive the Lord's love. In it they also see the Lord's mercy that seeks the devotee beyond all faults.

As Valluvar's heroine says, 'O thief, your chest is sweet to me', Radha's heart too sought him despite his fault.

This is still honoured as a subtle literary record of the pull of love.
