Explanation

In this verse the heroine compares two measures: millet and palmyra. Millet is a very small grain; the palmyra is a very tall tree. If desire has grown to the size of a palmyra, she says, there cannot be sulking even to the size of a millet grain. This comparison is among the most famous in the Tamil tradition. The small and the great stand opposite each other in one verse. The meaning is that where love is great there is no room for even a small quarrel.

The words 'oodamai vendum' join a wish and a counsel. The heroine tells herself: even if there is some reason to sulk, when desire has grown so full, it is best not to sulk. She is ready to let go even of her small complaints before the great measure of love.

This verse suits the purpose of the chapter: when the eagerness for meeting is great, the thought of sulking vanishes. But in later chapters we shall see Valluvar also praise sulking. That is the view that sulking gives pleasure; here, where eagerness for the meeting is uppermost, sulking is unnecessary. We may understand the two views as different moods.

Commentators take 'panaiththunai' in two ways, as the size of a palmyra fruit and as the size of a palmyra tree. In both, greatness is clear. Because millet and palmyra are objects of simple life, the charm of the simile is easily grasped.

In our lives too, when we meet after a long separation, it is wise not to keep small complaints in mind but to savour the joy of the meeting. Where love is great, small quarrels diminish by themselves.

A story

The Sea Bath on Masi Magam

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

In a seaside village near Puducherry lived Azhagan and his wife Meenakshi. Azhagan had gone to Nagapattinam for work. After three months apart, he had said he would be back for the festival of Masi Magam. It was the village's custom on Masi Magam to bring the village deities to the shore for the holy bath in the sea.

Meenakshi had a small grievance against him: that he had replied very late to the letters she wrote. 'When he comes I must ask this first; I must show him by staying silent a while,' she told her friend Valli. Valli laughed: 'Say it to yourself; we shall see when he comes.'

On Masi Magam at dawn people gathered on the shore. The deity came in procession and the holy bath in the sea took place. Meenakshi stood on the beach sand watching. Then Azhagan was seen coming from afar.

On seeing him all her grievance vanished. A smile spread on her face. The very word 'letter' left her memory. Valli stood nearby laughing and murmured softly, 'When desire as big as a palmyra has come, not even a millet grain of sulking can stay.'

Azhagan came near and said, 'Forgive me for the delay in my letters.' Meenakshi said, 'You have come; that is enough.' Together they bathed in the sea, and went to the temple to worship.

The story simply shows that when the eagerness for union grows great, small grievances melt of themselves.
