Explanation

In the last two verses of the chapter the hero's voice comes. In this verse he states the nature of love as a truth: love is more tender than a flower. A flower can fade at the slightest touch. The delicacy of love exceeds the delicacy of a flower. So, he holds, great care and gentleness are needed in handling it.

'Sevvi' means ripeness, a moment, the time of blooming. Each flower blooms at a particular time; touched before or after, it is spoiled. So too the feeling of love has its moment. Only a few, he says, understand that moment and act accordingly. In the word 'few' his humility appears; there may also be a wish to be one of those few.

Commentators go in two ways in giving the sense. One is a general truth pointing to the tenderness of love. The other is the hero's own admission, realising his fault: 'I acted without recognising the moment of love's blooming.' Both are fine.

This verse reminds us how important it is, when a relationship is blooming, to honour its speed and its ripeness. Hurrying and delaying both spoil the flower. To act gently and attentively is what protects love.

Valluvar here says the gentleness of love gently, through the image of a flower. He teaches by the very softness of his comparison, and the reader finds the verse itself behaving like what it describes: delicate, brief, and easily bruised by too much handling.

A story

The Garland-Makers of Srirangam

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

In Srirangam lived a woman named Malli, who strung garlands for the temple of Ranganatha, and her husband Poovan. At every dawn they would string garlands of jasmine, tulasi, champaka and other flowers. They knew day after day how tender flowers are.

Poovan would watch the hour each time he plucked a flower. 'You must not pluck a bud before it is fully ripe; nor must you pluck when it has bloomed and begun to fade. You must pluck it knowing its proper time,' he taught Malli. This knowledge was the life of their trade.

In their household life the same quality prevailed. Poovan understood Malli's moods; when she sulked he did not press her with talk, and when she was weary he would cheer her with small helps. Malli, feeling Poovan's patience, honoured him.

One day a young couple came to them to buy a garland. They were in a small quarrel. Poovan said to them with a smile, 'Love is as tender as a flower; handle it with patience.' That simple word changed their minds. Laughing, they went to offer the garland to Ranganatha.

The story simply shows that the quality of handling a flower became also the quality of handling love.

The weaving of garlands at the Srirangam temple has remained for generations a particular family tradition. The custom that the garland worn by Andal is offered to Ranganatha underlines the sanctity of the flower garland.
