Explanation

This verse is the other side of the previous one. There she said that she sees no fault where she sees him; here she says what happens when she does not see him. When she sees him she cannot see his faults; when she does not see him she sees as faults even what are no faults. That is, when he is near his faults disappear; when he is far, even his good deeds appear as faults. Her sight changes according to where he is.

Valluvar here conveys a subtle trait of the human mind. When lovers are apart, longing and sorrow disturb the mind. In that state even small matters seem faults: 'Why has he not sent word today? Why did he say that then?' Such thoughts arise. On seeing him face to face, all of them vanish.

Commentators take this verse as the heroine's honest self-criticism. She knows the swing of her own mind and does not hide it. This laughing at herself is her wisdom.

In our lives too, the fault of one near us goes unseen, and the good of one far away may appear as fault. Knowing this truth, we gain the sense to test gently our thoughts about loved ones who are distant. To ask oneself, 'Is it because he is absent that my mind thinks so?' prevents many a misunderstanding.

Valluvar records here with humour that the mirror of love changes on either side.

A story

A List of Grievances and Pongal at the Door

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

In a village near Thanjavur lived a woman named Kamala and her husband Sundaresan. Sundaresan worked in a shop at Kumbakonam. He came home only once a week. On the other days Kamala was alone.

In the days when her husband was away, Kamala's mind began to think differently. Grievances piled in her mind: that last week he had spoken a little harshly to his mother, that the flowers he brought her were wilted, that he had not come at the time he said. To her friend Amudha she even recited a long list: 'This time, when he comes, I must tell him everything.'

Amudha laughed and said, 'Let us see whether you say even one of them when he comes.' Kamala said, 'I shall surely tell him.'

On the evening before the festival of Pongal, Sundaresan came home. He carried a new pot and sugarcane in his hand. As he stood smiling at the door, Kamala forgot the whole list. She took the vessel from him and asked lovingly, 'Was the road hard?'

That night Amudha came and said, 'What happened to the list?' Kamala said shyly, 'At the sight of his face I remembered nothing.' They both laughed. The next morning, when the Pongal pot boiled over, Kamala called out 'Pongalo Pongal' with joy.

The story shows with humour that when he is near, love hides faults, and when he is far, the mind magnifies them.

Are there faults you have been holding against someone who is far from you that would vanish if you saw them?
