Explanation

The simile in this verse is very subtle. When kohl is being applied to the eye, the stick that paints is very near the eye; yet the eye does not see the stick. In the same way, when the beloved stands before her, his fault is not seen by the heroine's eye. Not because there is no fault, but because love veils the eye. There are two subtleties in this simile. The first is that what is too near is not seen. The second is that the stick comes not to harm but to beautify, and so his faults too do not appear to her as harmful.

'Pazhi' means fault or blame. 'Kanda idaththu' means when seen, at the place of seeing. In the next verse comes what happens when he is not seen. Reading the two verses together makes clear the two faces of the gaze of love.

Commentators see this verse in two ways. In one view it is a gentle humour pointing to the blindness of love. In the other it is the largeness of love: a mind that forgives faults. We may combine the two.

In our own lives parents, children and friends sometimes fail to see another's faults through love. That may be the beauty of love, and sometimes a need for caution. Valluvar does not pass judgement; he beautifully pictures the event.

A story

Vasuki and Valluvar

This is a story told in tradition about the life of Thiruvalluvar. The details come from oral tradition and differ slightly from book to book.

As tradition tells it, Valluvar lived a simple life at Mylapore, working as a weaver. His wife Vasuki was devoted and loving. The story says that, when he ate, Valluvar had asked his wife to keep a cup of water and a needle beside his leaf.

Vasuki did so every day. Tradition says it was his practice to pick up with the needle any grain of rice that fell, wash it in the water, and eat it. But not a single grain ever fell, and the needle was never used. Even so Vasuki did not ask him, 'What is this for?'

One day Valluvar himself lovingly asked her, 'All these years you have kept the needle and water. Do you know the reason? Why did you never ask?' Vasuki said calmly, 'I trusted that if you asked me to do it, there must be a reason.' That answer moved him.

She saw neither oddity nor fault in her husband's practice. As the eye does not see the stick that paints kohl, her love saw in his habit not a fault but trust. Some say with charm that this is a living example of the very verse Valluvar wrote.

Vasuki's love and trust are honoured in the Tamil tradition as the sweet foundation of household life.

To reflect on

Where has love made you overlook a fault, and has it been a grace or a danger?
