Explanation

Kudimai means the dignity and character of a good family. Valluvar says the measure of a family's worth is the conduct of its members. A person born into any family who has good conduct will be honoured by the world. If he lapses, whatever honour he inherited by birth diminishes. The phrase 'low birth' is best understood as the state of becoming low, rather than a fixed condition of birth.

No one should misuse this verse to divide people by birth. Elsewhere Valluvar says that all living beings are alike in birth, so this verse too emphasises that conduct, not birth, decides who is high and who is low. A person of a famous family who behaves badly lowers that family's name, while a person from a humble family who behaves well raises his family in the world's eyes.

We see examples all around us. A teacher from an ordinary household who earns a name for integrity lifts the name of his entire family. A person born to wealth who acts dishonestly breaks the standing of his own house. Thus the honour of any family rests on the behaviour of each of its members. Each person is both heir and trustee: he receives a good name from those before him and holds it for those who come after. By his daily conduct he either adds to or draws down that account. This is a hopeful teaching, because the account is always open to anyone willing to act rightly.

A story

Satyakama Jabala

This story is told in the Chandogya Upanishad. A boy named Satyakama longed to study the sacred knowledge and went to his mother Jabala. "Mother, I wish to go to a teacher and study. What is my gotra?" Jabala answered truthfully: "My son, in my youth I served in many households. When you were born I did not know who your father was. My name is Jabala and yours is Satyakama. Tell your teacher you are Satyakama Jabala."

Satyakama went to the sage Gautama, who asked, "Of what lineage are you?" The boy repeated exactly what his mother had told him. "I do not know my father. My mother is Jabala. I am Satyakama Jabala." Many standing nearby might have thought his birth lowly.

But Gautama was pleased: "One who can speak so much truth so boldly cannot be anything but a brahmana in spirit. Bring the sacred twigs; I will initiate you. You have not strayed from truth." He accepted the boy as a disciple.

Gautama gave him four hundred lean cows and said, "Do not return until they become a thousand." Satyakama tended the herd in the forest for years, and his patience, humility and truthfulness grew. The Upanishad says nature itself taught him aspects of Brahman through a bull, fire, a swan and a diving bird.

Not by birth but by the conduct of speaking truth he became the pupil of a great teacher. The story is a fine proof that nobility comes from conduct.
