Explanation

This verse sets out a clear equation of cause and effect. Conduct leads to eminence, lapse leads to blame. Eidhaap pazhi is read in two ways. Some take it as blame that one should never have incurred, that is, blame of the harshest kind. Others take it as blame so large that it covers over all the good the person did elsewhere. Both agree that the blame brought by a lapse is very great.

One may ask why a small fault brings so large a blame. The reason is that conduct is the sign of trustworthiness. Once that trust is broken, people begin to look at all his other acts with suspicion. The eminence earned by good conduct is gathered slowly, but the blame brought by a lapse can arrive in a day and sweep it away. So the relationship is unequal: rise is slow and fall is quick.

In modern life think of the name of a leader, a teacher or a doctor. A reputation built over years can be clouded by a single news item about wrongdoing. On the other hand, we also see people from humble backgrounds who, by walking honestly day after day, reach a high place in public memory. Seeing this, the young should learn the worth of conduct early. That is what Valluvar hopes. He is not threatening us with blame so much as showing us how fragile a name is, and how carefully it should therefore be handled.

A story

Nala and Kali

This story comes from the Nalopakhyana in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. Nala, king of Nishadha, was renowned for good conduct and valour. At Damayanti's swayamvara, Indra and other gods came desiring her. But Damayanti chose Nala. The gods blessed her and left.

On their way back, Kali Purusha and Dvapara heard from the gods that the swayamvara was over. Kali was angry that Damayanti had married a mortal. He resolved to bring Nala down and destroy his kingdom and wealth. But because Nala was upright, Kali could find no way into him. Tradition says he waited twelve years.

One day, after relieving himself, Nala came away without washing his feet fully, they say not washing his heels. It was a small lapse in purity. Through that small gap Kali entered him. From then on his judgement clouded, and he agreed to play at dice with his brother Pushkara.

Under Kali's sway Nala lost again and again. He lost his kingdom and wealth and went to the forest with Damayanti. In confusion he left her alone in the forest. Later, bitten by the serpent Karkotaka, his form changed, and he served as the charioteer Bahuka in the palace of Rituparna, king of Ayodhya.

Nala's life shows how a single small lapse in discipline brought so much blame and suffering. Later, through the art of dice learned from Rituparna, he freed himself from Kali's hold, rejoined Damayanti and recovered his kingdom. But the long sorrow between was heavy.
