Explanation

This couplet compares the relation between body and life to the relation between a bird and its nest. The bird stays in its nest, lays eggs, hatches chicks and lives; but when its time comes it flies away from the nest. The nest remains alone. Life, too, stays in the body and lives, and at one time leaves without warning.

The word "kudambai" has two senses. Most commentators say it means a bird's nest. Some take it as the shell of an egg, and then the chick breaking the shell and leaving must be taken as the image. In both senses the message is the same: the body is only the place where life stays; it is not life.

The word "natpu", friendship, in this couplet is notable. Life is close to the body throughout its time, yet the bond is not permanent; it is only a friendship. As friends may part, life and body part.

We may see this not only as a sorrow of life but also as a reminder to care for the body well and to use it for acts of dharma. It is while the nest is there that the bird sings.

The image of the bird shows one more subtlety: once the bird has flown, the nest loses its purpose. That is, the body's worth comes from life. We bury or cremate a body from which life has gone quickly; we do not wish to keep it long. This is simple evidence that life is higher than the body.

A story

The Grandmother's Lesson

In a small village near Vellore, an old man named Sivaraman passed away (an imagined tale). His grandson Vetri, working in Bangalore, hurried home. He could not bear it on seeing his grandfather's body; the man who had conversed with him until yesterday now lay still.

The day after the last rites Vetri sat alone in the courtyard. Above his grandfather's room was a small sparrow's nest, empty. His grandmother Meenakshi saw him looking at it.

She sat beside him and said, "Your grandfather read the Gita every morning; one saying of it I remember." She repeated the teaching in the second chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, that as one casts off worn clothes and puts on new ones, the self casts off the old body and takes a new one. She added, "Wherever the sparrow in that nest has flown, the time the nest stood was not wasted; chicks grew. Think how many received love and help in the days your grandfather's body was here."

From that day Vetri decided to use his body and time for acts of dharma. He began helping, from time to time, the village school his grandfather had started.

Thus the couplet, "The friendship of body and life is like a bird flying away and leaving the nest alone", turned into a comfort in a family's grief.
